History

No one knew what would become of the little bay stallion. Only the sky seemed to be the limit but what no one did not anticipate was the battle to keep him alive as his mother died just few hours after the foaling. Couple of mares rejected the foal and everyone thought that it would be too late until there was finally a mare who accepted the foal and slowly he started to gain more strenght and everyone were assured that he'll survive.

Character descreption

Having a horse with the nickname that Spice has you could think about something that you alway hear about chestnut mares. Well, getting to know Spice more you could at some point say that you’ve seen more spicier mares than what this stallion is. Having a such a gentleman stallion might be hugely because of the start for life that Spice had. Of course there is still days where the bay gentleman shows that he’s a stallion but mostly working with Spice is usually with out any bigger problems. Usually the springtime is the hardest part with Spice as the mares are coming into a heat but with a little ”hey I’m here and you need to listen to me” reminding he’ll remembers to behave. Altough generally Spice is easy going for a stallion he’s not really a horse that children could take care or at least during that time there needs to be an adult looking after the kids.

Tacking up Spice brings up the spicness in him. Because Spice has high morality for riding usually as he starts to step as soon as he even sees some bit of tack. Actually tacking Spice up might be the most annoying part of taking care of him. With some time and patience – okay A Lot Of Patience – tacking up Spice has been possible and after he’s all done it’s time to move into the arena or to the indoor.

As an eventer Spice loves anything to do with jumping. Sometimes it brings trouble with the flatwork so riding him on the flat asks a lot of skills. And patience. At it’s hardest riding Spice is annoying but when the peaces are starting to click together he starts to move a lot more better and he’ll turn a lot more softer and easier to ride. This is the point where riding Spice is feeling super rewarding and you feel like you could ask almost anything from him.

Doign a good base on the flatwork helps a lot with jumping. Spice has a long but easy controllable canter but also he has a great suction for fences. Before starting to jump big or harder tasks it’s more than important to make sure that Spice is listening. It might seem a little daunting to get him to listen but all the work that is done with Spice before starting will be paying off in jump off or in time classes. Because of his speediness Spice isn’t the most careful one so there is more than good chance for poles if rider isn’t awake.

When moving to the cross country Spices speedyness is going to be a great plus. Because of his long and fast canter step time is not the thing to be feared about with Spice. In the crosscountry Spice is a little bit more careful when coming to jumping but still rider needs to to keep focus on when closing to the jump. Mainly all the jumps that you can find at crosscountry aren’t the ones to make Spice eyeing them but water is the hardest one. As soon as there is a chance for Spice to see the water rider needs to be very awake. Altough you would thought at this level the horses would not be scared of anything, Spice being slightly scared of water is something unusual. But with a good rider all is possible with Spice.

Travelling with Spice is easy as long as there is no mares in heat close by. Having a stallion box and preferably somewhere not too close mares. When walking with Spice you definately need to have bridle and a little bit longer leadrope or lunge.

The story begins

The first days with Spice went just purely of getting to know the stallion. Also, I gave Spice some time to get to know his new stable. Also having these few days meant that I had time to put all the stuff into their places so that as soon as we would be able to start getting into action and starting to train for competitions. Of course, I wasn’t planning to get into shows too fast and I was willing to take all the time it was needed before we could be ready to start doing some shows.

Also, I needed to find someone to train us, and I was not sure if the same person would be able to train us in all the parts that built up an eventing event or if I should find trainers for all the different parts. How easy finding a trainer or trainers would be something that I was sure of as I never haven’t needed to find one. Or at least I haven’t needed to find three. After couple of days, I started to introduce some movement into Spice’s daily routine by hand walking him for couple of times a day. The first time was interesting as Spice was A Little Spicy. But after couple of walks he started to walk a little bit nicer so there was smaller chance for me or him to get hurt.

After a week of hand walks, I started to lunge Spice. First few times I did keep Spice on the lunge line so that I could see how Spice would act during lunging and slowly I was also adding free lunge. Free lunging offered a better chance for Spice to buck and move his body in a way that he couldn’t do when hand walking or lunging. Looking him having his best life as Spice was able to zoom freely, I hoped that as soon I was going to tack Spice up properly, he would not be as crazy as he was running freely. Week went by with lunging and free lunging before I tacked Spice up fully. I still lunged him couple of more days before I felt confident enough to try and ride him. For our first ride I made sure that the indoor was empty during the time we were there as I wasn’t willing to risk any other life than mine. I did know that Spice wasn’t the easiest horse to ride and as it was going to be our first ride everything was possible.

Although I wasn’t religious, I still catch myself saying a little prayer before I putted my left leg into the stirrup and bounced into his saddle. As soon as I sat on him, I hoped that the bay wouldn’t explode into every possible way. For my luck he seemed to be okay and as soon I was ready, I put my leg into his side and asked Spice to walk. Quickly it became clear that having just a nice walk with long rein wasn’t something that was doable with him. My plan wasn’t to ride Spice properly as this was our first ride but as he told me that he needed something to think about I started to play a little bit with him. After a quick around 20-minute ride I had ridden walk, trot and canter. This was enough for this time and after bringing Spice back to walk I gave him a scratch to thank him.

When my feet touched the ground after demounting Spice, I was a little bit more confidential about my decision. Of course, I knew that the road with Spice wouldn’t be easy but at least the first time I mounted him didn’t end up in my death so maybe we would survive.
